Finals Day Actors say to never bring a child or an animal into a scene because they will steal the show. And so it was at Maidenhead Tennis Club’s annual Finals Day when some of the most exciting tennis was played by the youngsters.
Ben Gauna and Lorne Edmunds started the ball rolling in the under 15 (U15) boy’s doubles in a fantastic 3 sets shoot out. In the 2nd set their opponents Daniel Marioni and George Hedley (9 years old) had to win the tie break to stay in the match. Ben put a lot of pressure on them by continuously hitting cross winners and by his power and reach at the net. The pressure was too great and Ben and Lorne took the match 6-1, 6-7, 6-2. Ben and Lorne then took it out on each other in the U14 singles. Visually it looked an unfair contest as Ben, at 14 years old stood at 176cms (5’10”) around 30cms (1’) taller than Lorne. But what Lorne lacked in height he made up for in attitude. Never did his body language suggest that he was going to accept defeat and he gave as good as he got. Ben however had the physical advantage and translated it effectively into a 7-5, 6-0 win.
Their next tussle was against the Flynn/Jones dynasty which has ruled Maidenhead juniors for many years. Andrew Flynn, 18 and Anthony Jones, 16, winner and runner up in the U18 singles faced Lorne 13 and Ben 14. “No contest” you would have thought. But there were a couple of factors to be taken into consideration. Andrew had only just started playing after a dislocated kneecap which was still unstable and one leg was visibly thinner than the other whilst Anthony had been concentrating on his hockey rather than his tennis. However, their body language suggested that the title was theirs by right but Ben and Lorne were far from intimidated and they exuded maturity and determination from the outset. The match started and carried on going with serve and the outcome was by no means certain. Andrew tried to stamp his authority on the match by picking up the pace but could not quite find his length and reduced his power. After this it was Ben who appeared to be the more forceful with his lovely action and height producing powerful serves. Lorne was amazingly cool for his years and just kept getting everything back and was unfortunate to lose his serve in the 12th game for the youngsters to lose the first set 5-7.
The second set carried on in the same vein, characterised by quality rallies until the score mirrored itself with Ben and Lorne taking the 12th game to win the set 7-5. The third set was over a little too quickly at 6-1 in favour of the older boys but it was with a sense of relief that they came off the court – deserved winners but not as easily as they might have hoped. And considering that George Hedley, not yet 10, and Daniel Marioni, 13, had taken a set off Ben and Lorne, what does the future hold?
Rebecca Wyatt again dominated the girls’ section by winning the U14 and the U18 singles and the seniors were probably relieved that she did not enter their competition. Her composed but relaxed and fluid style took her through with comparative ease despite her lack of years though she stumbled against a sparky Shona Young who took the first set of the U14 singles 6-3 but then managed only one game in each of the subsequent sets . She also won the U15 girls doubles alongside Lauren Webb and the mixed doubles with Anthony Jones. It will be surprising if she is not playing high up in the senior teams and contending for the senior singles title next year.
The ladies singles had two new finalists but Lisa Bailey, after putting up some vigorous resistance to take five games in the first set, succumbed in the second to a 6-0 loss to give Claire Roberts her first title as Ladies Singles Champion.
Roberts also played with Sue Granville in the Ladies Doubles and pulled off some fine powerful shots to take a 4-1 lead off Gina Egby and Sue Thomson in their second set, having lost the first 4-6. Gina then attacked the net, pulling back to 5-5 but it was not enough and Claire and Sue took the set 7-5. The beginning of the third set promised fireworks with Gina serving a ten deuces opening game but that appeared to be decisive and they only dropped one game after that to take the match.
The men’s singles was probably expected to be anticlimactic as the reigning champion of the last few years, Richard Downs, had twisted his ankle in his semi final match against Alan Brown. Thus Alan had to face last years finalist Jeremy Cross and not many watched the match at the outset. However, it could be seen that Alan was not going to allow himself to be a pushover and took the game to Jeremy, mixing his shots and tactics. However, Jeremy hit the ball harder and made some impressive shots to take the first set 7-5 with only two of the twelve games going to deuce. However, the tide turned dramatically in the second set, the spectators started to take notice and their numbers swelled. through the second set as Alan took the first five games before conceding one and levelled the match with a 6-1 win. The third set was tense with games going with serve, albeit with many deuces. The tenth game was essentially the decider with Alan serving at 4-5 and saving 4 match points and having 7 deuces before drawing level at 5-5. This gave him the impetus to comfortably break Jeremy’s serve and then take the match and the title on his next service game.
Whilst they are very young the intensity of the mini tennis players was no less in the Green Doubles. Callum & Alistair made a head start by taking the 1st 3 games. Long exciting rallies, except the scores didn't reflect the match. Although Josh & Adam fought gallantly they could not break down the consistently good length ground strokes of Alistair and Callum.
In the Orange doubles Seb Harris and Lee Granville took on Matty and Daisy Crowfoot. The match swung both ways and the audience started to get vocal to such an extent that they were advised by the umpire that this was suburban England and not Flushing Meadow. The boys finally edged ahead and took the match 7-5
