Wendy Bruce-Jones, a long time member of the club, passed away on 1st Jan 2008. Wendy was a regular social player with her husband Doug until Doug's health and her fitness made that impossible. She was made a life member a few years back for her services to the club as assistant treasurer. This was in fact a job of membership secretary. She managed this without the help of a computer, recognising members at the club and handing out renewals notices and then shoe tags so as to save the club costs. Peter Herke who was treasurer at the time said that she made life much easier for him by having all the paperwork done with banking details and everything - all very neat and minimal further work for him.
MEN DO WELL 12 Nov 2007

Four months in the preparation and one day to finish it all. Maidenhead Tennis Club’s finals day last Sunday was the culmination of several rounds of knockout competition in 24 different groups of seniors and 20 juniors – over 40 matches were played on the day in brilliant, and blinding, sunlight.
Richard Downs reclaimed his title of Men’s Champion again in an entertaining but ultimately one sided match against Geoff Egby. As usual, Egby put everything into his game and brought off some dazzling shots. However Downs’ power and precision meant that Egby was not given the opportunity to create many such shots and took only two games off the returning champion.
The Ladies Singles was won by last year’s champion Claire Roberts but she had to struggle all the way against a calm but determined Sue Thomson who belies he ability with her ever cheerful smile. The second set went to a tie break and this seemed to be the style of Roberts’ next two matches which both went to three sets making it appear that Roberts spent all day on court. She and her partner Paul Brill seemed to have the mixed doubles in their pocket when she served a love game to lead Chris Gray and Sue Granville 5-3 in the final set. Gray then held his serve and Brill failed to serve out the match. In an exciting finish, Gray and Granville pulled back and overtook to 6-5 but failed to turn this immediately into victory but finally clinched it in the tie breaker.
The match of the day was the men’s doubles when Nigel Mann, the club’s coach, showed his competitive side by retaining his title with Alan Brown against new finalists Richard May and Tim Paton. The match featured an exciting late comeback from 5-1 and match point down by May and Paton. They pulled back to 4-5 but then Mann served out to love including a fine ace.
As usual Mike Bottomley complicated scheduling the tournament by appearing in four finals in the veterans’ section of which he won two. He reversed his defeat last year against Cedric Egby in the senior singles and took the men’s doubles with Chris Gray.
Junior tennis is often dominated by precocious youngsters winning everything across all age groups and Maidenhead has some such youngsters. Unfortunately Rebecca Wyatt only featured in one finals which she won to the obvious delight of her partner Lauren Webb. The rest of the girls’ matches were dominated by the Young sisters, Shona, 14 and Lindsay 12. They faced each other in the under 18 singles which was won by the harder hitting Shona whose easy power is a delight to watch, and in the mixed doubles when Shona was partnered to victory by Anthony Jones. This was Jones’ last junior finals day – the end of another family dynasty at the junior level. Lindsay Young did get the satisfaction of a win against her elder sister in the girls’ under 15 doubles and she also took the under 12 singles against a brave Chloe Lant.
The boys’ section has one of Britain’s top players for his age, George Hedley, who has been very busy and successful playing tournaments around the country. An unassuming lad with excellent range of shots and anticipation, he won one singles and two doubles titles on the day. The under 18 doubles was a well balanced affair with his partner Anthony Jones against Lorne Edmunds and Ben Gauna, peppered with both frustration and exhilaration. Edmunds and Gauna are also great rivals who are about evens in singles victories against each other, with the older Gauna winning their under 16 clash of the day. Edmunds had his glory day out of sight of the spectators as his under 18 singles against Anthony Jones was delayed until Monday to allow them some recovery time. In a hard fought match the younger Lorne (under 14 age group) beat Jones 7-5, 6-4
The day featured an official opening of the club’s new Mini-Tennis court which Mary Stanley, the junior representative, explained has allowed the club accreditation as a Mini Tennis Performance Club. Mini-Tennis is a scaled down version of the game and four small courts fits in the space of one full size court and allows young children an introduction to the game using softer balls and smaller racquets. The club has fought hard and long to provide this facility. Lee Granville and Seb Harris both appeared 3 times in the honours for mini tennis on the tennis club’s finals day.

Clay Conqueror
Last weekend, 10 year old George Hedley played in the Pre Qualifying round of the 12 & under Clay Court Championships. In his first match, he faced Charles Hill from Warwickshire. He won an excellent first set and having had to wait for the court to be watered lost the second set by triumphed in the tie break. In the last qualifying round he faced Middlesex player Marc Huttman (8.1). They had played once previously, Huttman the winner that day. After two hours of deep hitting, long rallies on the testing clay, the players stood at 1 set each. Another championship tie break!!!. After 20 minutes, George found himself match point 10-9 down. The tense rally started with testing groundstrokes, until George found the perfect opportunity to hit a delicate drop shot which found Huttman falling on the clay in a desperate attempt to reach it!! Hedley never looked back winning the next two points and qualifying for the final qualification round to be held at Edgbaston this weekend.
Well done and Good Luck George!
Junior NJCL Teams start strongly
The Junior NCL teams have started in fine form in the NJCL County leagues.
12 & U Boys Under 12 (George Hedley, Nathan Young, Tintin Smith and Callum Turner) have beaten Charters (5-1) and Esporta (5-1) and have Caversham B left to play. If they win this match, they will qualify for the final on Sunday 20th May.
The Boys Under 14 team (Lorne Edmunds, George Hedley, Ben Ratcliff, Tintin Smith) have beaten Windsor and Bracknell and are facing the two toughest teams Latika and Caversham in the next few weeks.
The Boys Under 18 team Anthony Jones, Ben Gauna, Tom Wright, Ollie Hedley and strengthened by the inclusion of Luke Carter have thashed Bracknell and Latika and look favourites to qualify for the National finakls for the 4th successive year.
The newly formed Girls Under 12 (Chloe Lant, Abigail Conner, Elinor Wright and Sarah Weedon) have beaten Racqueteers and have a crunch match against Caversham to determine who will qualify for the National Finals.
The 16&U Girls have experienced problems fielding a team and playing opposition due to exam and social pressures, but we are still hopeful that they will qualify for the National Finals.
Death of Geoff Flower
I trust you have heard the news about Geoff already, and that this news doesn’t come as a huge shock to you. Geoff died on Sunday of a dissecting aneurism which is very uncommon in someone so young.
We’re planning to hold a service for Geoff at Slough Crematorium on Monday 2nd April at 1pm, followed by drinks at 39 Courthouse Road, Maidenhead.
Please forward the news to people you feel would like to pay their respects to Geoff.
Thank you to everyone who has got in touch and shown their support.

Our View of Ourselves
•Many members prepared to contribute to management of club •Good playing facilities •Bits of clubhouse could be refreshed •Generally good atmosphere •Good balance between team and social playing
Threats
•Bisham may poach our good juniors •May lose junior performance status •Members may leave for better facilities •Cannot rely on waiting list lasting forever •Surrounded by houses could prove risk to future floodlight playing
LTA Blueprint
•Main focus is on Coaches & Juniors •Support to clubs will be based on if we are: –International High PerfClubs (up to 10) –High PerfClubs (40 to 50) –County Accredited Clubs (about 175) •Little about Howthe LTA will do everything •LTA continue to favour Indoor Facilities

Why Move -1?
•Only 6 courts floodlit •Oaken Grove –vandalism; separate from club •Severe parking problems •Lots of hassle with planners
Why Move -2?
•Cannot meet future requirements: –Performance club (juniors) –Some members already use other indoor courts –Can’t expand at present site •Cannot help 300 waiting list juniors play tennis •LTA Blueprint -unable to meet LTA requirements for High PerfClubs or possibly County Accredited Clubs -Indoor courts •Maintain ability to attract top quality coaches
Move Committee
•Considering several possibilities •Nothing close to fruition •Need to maintain confidentiality •Standard process will be followed: –Move committee .Full Committee .EGM •EGM will be called ifwe find a suitable site
George on TV
Catch George Hedley on Sky Sports TV. George won 4 Sunday Telegraph Grand Prix events during 2006 and qualified for the Masters Event held at Center Parcs, Nottingham in October. This event and the other age groups were covered by Sky Sports and the footage is being shown on Sky Sports TV Friday 29th December and Sunday 31st December.
This was a great achievement by George and he did really well at the event narrowly missing qualification from his group. He now moves up to the 12 & under age group and has already made an impressive start to that age group qualifying for the Ariel Indoor Series Finals being held in Southampton this weekend.

Courts 7, 8 and 9 being relaid2nd Oct 2006
As of Monday 9th, Spadeoak will be working on site to rebuild the foundations of courts 7, 8 and 9 and to build a new Mini Tennis court alongside on the grassy area and this will be court 10
These courts may be out of action until early December and there will be disruption regarding car parking and access to courts etc. There will be less car parking available and the turning area will no longer be available. Maybe something can be arranged once the equipment is on site.
If you have any concerns with regards to this project could members talk to Keith or Gerry Murray in the first place rather than approaching any of the contractors.
Most of us have suffered disruption of building work in our own homes and this is no different and it will cause inconvenience but it will be managed so as to be minimised. In some cases the disruption may be more severe but this should be to avoid a longer lasting effect at a lower level .
Finals Day There were no real surprises on Finals Day but there were some cracking matches and many new champions including the Ladies and Mens singles.
Lisa Bailey success31st August 2006

More Junior Success31st July 2006 The girls u14 won their 2nd round match against Halton,Bucks on Sunday 3-1 and are through to the regional final (against Winchester or Caesarean).
Floodlight failure23rd July 2006 Unfortunately mltc was unsuccessful with its appeal against the refusal of planning permission to install floodlights on courts 7, 8 9 and the planned mini tennis court. Under the aegis of Gerry Murray we put up a professional attempt to get the refusal overturned but ultimately the arbitration went against us.
We are now planning to get the mini tennis court built as soon as possible and to get 7, 8 and 9 relaid. This could start in September and unfortunately there will be some major disruption but this will be controlled as best we can.
We have two Champions23rd July 2006 Mike Bottomley and Nigel Mann both won their age groups (over 55 and 0ver 45) in last weekend's open championships at Harpenden. Mike beat both the second and first seeds to achieve this.

MAIDENHEAD OPEN JUNIOR TENNIS 17 April 2006
With a record of over 350 entries including some of the country’s top players most of the local players found the competition very tough but a great learning experience.
However GEORGE HEDLEY of the home club showed he can match the best with an impressive straight sets victory in the Boys 10U final of 6/1,6/2 over Dorset’s Joe Dodridge. Coach Nigel Mann has high hopes for George whose play is very mature for one so young.
The only other Berkshire success was CHRIS DRAKEFORD-LEWIS from Sonning who demonstrated why he is ranked No.2 in the country at Boys 12U age-group with 5 straight set victories including the final over Ollie Batchelor of Surrey 6/3, 6/2.
In the Girls events Buck’s LARESSA EASTERBROOK picked up 2 singles titles in convincing fashion whilst Hampshire’s NATALIE SAYER & brother NICHOLAS both won in their age groups.
Prizes were presented by Maidenhead LTC’s Chairman DAVE SCARBOROUGH who congratulated the players & organisers on an excellent Tournament.
Liz Moore and her helpers did a fantastic job on the catering, raising over £900 of profit which was shared equally between the club and Action Medical Research. As a junior who helped over three days Lisa Bailey also deserves a special mention.

Celebration of Life of Frances Hall 1 April 2006
There was a gathering to celebrate the life of Frances Hall at Maidenhead Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday April and the club house was full. Various members recounted their friendship with Frances who was universally liked by those who met her. Many members and other friends and family went with her bamboo coffin to see her buried near Petersfield in the South Downs in a woodland burial site.
Frances requested no black dress, no long faces and no bought flowers and these wishes were respected.
Her memory lives on with an always cheerful face and a lovely smile.

Maidenhead Tennis Club Finals Day Juniors steal the limelight
NOTE: 170 pictures are available - just click here
They had been playing against each other in practice and in matches for over ten years and they were always close. Andrew Flynn won last years finals of Maidenhead Tennis Club’s under 18 tournament. This was Chris Jones’ last chance of getting the trophy for himself. The match did not start as he would have liked as his first serve was a double fault and he lost the game. Whilst he broke back he nevertheless trailed all the way to lose the first set 3-6. Flynn, the taller of the two but slighter in build, appeared the aggressor with a powerful first serve but which increasingly failed to get in. He did not take full advantage of his height especially in his second serve by not striking the ball at full stretch and was fortunate that Jones did not attack the relatively weak second serve. What Flynn lacked in power on that serve he more than made up for in his ferocious ground strokes when he got a ball at the right height. Much of the time Jones was on his toes and retrieved amazingly well, wider and wider on both flanks using that beautiful one handed backhand to keep him in the game.
Flynn took the first two games of the second set but Jones took the next two, passing through eight deuces to achieve this. The crowd started to swell in number as they sensed a great match. At 5-5 the crowd asked for a three setter. Jones answered them by serving a love game then forced through his advantage to win the set 7-5 to level the match. He started the next set winning his serve and broke Flynn’s serve in a rattling five deuce game. Flynn responded by breaking back then losing his own serve but his determination shone through – he leant into his ground strokes and powered them through Jones’ defences winning four consecutive games to lead 5-3. Jones was mixing his shots, trying drop shots but rarely to his benefit as the court was too slow and his opponent too quick. He tried looping shots, slowing the game down, which worked better as Flynn tended not to pulverise these. Their fitness was impressive: there were no heaving chests, no breaks to catch their breaths; there were no challenges of line calls, no double faults, there was just great tennis between two very competitive friends. Flynn broke serve twice to go 6-5 up and then Jones forced the tie break in some dazzling rallies. This was a game that deserved to stop at that point as an honourable draw but that could not be and Jones won the tie break and emerged the champion of an enthralling match. Maybe Flynn’s 90 minutes of hockey practice earlier that day made the difference. Or maybe not.
The men’s singles was also between two friends – Richard Downs, the current champion, and Jeremy Cross. This promised to be a fine powerful match and so it proved to be with end to end rallies with surprisingly few volleys of great speed and skill with games going with serve until 4-4, then against serve to 6-6. At this point Downs, who was serving at an estimated 120mph, held serve to take the first set. The second set was more one sided with Cross finding Downs’ serve difficult to control and taking only one game.
At the other end of the scale, observed by but a few, was a game of great athleticism and style between cousins Victoria King and Florence Ingall in the 12 and under girls singles. These girls chased and struck the ball beautifully in a match which parents had been forbidden to watch and who had to be advised of progress by text message. It was a wonderful marathon event which King eventually won 12-10 in the third set. It appears that they forgot that they should have played a tie break in the third set! These are two girls to be watched in the future (if they allow it) and they are proving it as they and Shona Young recently reached the Regional Finals of the National Junior Club League for under 12s.
The final of a new competition for men over 55 was fought between two ex men’s singles champions of the club during the 1960’s, Dick Trevor and Cedric Egby They had pushed aside any young pretenders (anyone under 60) on their way to the final but in the end the younger Egby took the new crown. Apparently, they had never met before in a singles tournament.
Not many matches went to three sets, the ladies doubles handicap being one of these with Sam Crowfoot and Rosie Clark suffering a 0-6 defeat in between winning sets of 6-2 and 6-3 against Michelle Leveridge and Nikki O’Kane.
Rebecca Wyatt, Jessica Bull and Lauren Webb took the bulk of the girls titles in interesting combinations. Wyatt took the u14 and u18 singles, the u15 doubles with Lauren Webb and the mixed doubles with Anthony Jones, whilst Jessica Bull took the u16 singles and the u18 doubles with Lauren Webb. They also collected a large number of the prizes that were generously donated by RE/Max, the new estate agency in Maidenhead.
The ladies doubles was forecast by Gina Egby to be one sided as she and Sue Thomson were up against Megan Emmet and Gemma King, Emmett having had an England rating until recently. To Egby’s surprise she and Thomson took the first three games, breaking Emmett’s serve in the process. After that though, the game followed predictions and they took only one more game in that and the next set. Emmett also dropped only one game in her win in the ladies singles.
In the mixed doubles finals, Richard Downs and Gemma King took on James Weeks and Gina Egby. Weeks and Egby took the lead by winning the tie break in the first set, with some great net play by Egby. Downs' serve proved too much to handle, and they won the exciting second and third sets, breaking early in the final set and serving it out to win 6 - 2.
Thirty seven finals had been squeezed into nine courts and eight hours of thrilling tennis watched by friends, families and enthusiasts.
