LADIES’TEAM NEWS

We have welcomed some new blood into the teams this year; not only have three new 1st and 2nd team players; Claire Roberts, Gill Peplow and Oksana Ivanova (or Oksana Novotna as I inadvertently renamed her in a newspaper report) joined us, we are also delighted to include some REALLY young blood into the squads. Invited juniors Lauren Webb, Rebecca Wyatt, Jessica Franco and junior of the year, Lisa Bailey have enthusiastically battled it out on court and easily held their own against strong opposition. Also ex junior Maddie Taylor has returned from university and has already played several matches for us. These youngsters have slightly reduced the average age of the team players (which unfortunately seems to be getting dangerously high!)
These new players came at just the right time as the ‘oldies’ seem to have been dogged by injury, illness and unavailability throughout he summer and winter. I wrote in my annual Ladies Team Report that the addition of these new players might mean that the regulars would have to drop down a team, however we lost so many team players to the above reasons that in the end, we seemed to maintain ‘status quo’!
One such casualty to illness was Irene Parris who went off on a dream cruise in September, only to return with pneumonia and also minus her luggage! Sounds like the ‘Holiday from Hell! She is only just getting back to full strength and hopes to return to matches asap.
Another loss to our teams has been Sue Thomson, a regular on Finals Day, who is the ONLY player I’ve known to break her leg on a tennis court, while standing still! The only upside was that at least it gave other people a chance to reach the finals this year!
Other casualties have included Gwen King (torn wrist ligament) Sue Topchik (pulled calf muscle), Ann Chance (torn arm ligament). Mary Coleman, who insists on being a bit different, has happily recovered from a number of injuries including, golfer’s elbow (and she doesn’t even play golf!) as well as runner’s knee! What’s next Mary, athlete’s foot? Lynne Chisholm (foot operation), Sam Crowfoot, out with appendicitis, and even super fit veteran, Jill Palfrey, was unusually laid up for a while with a leg injury. Add to that several bad backs (including mine), knees and shoulders as well as general wear and tear to aging bodies and you’ll get the picture. We mustn’t forget that erstwhile team player Sarah Breeden who has had a long absence from team tennis with various excuses including broken fingernails, hairdresser’s appointments and shopping trips.
Last summer and winter’s results were published in the most recent newsletter and are also up on the notice board at the club. All 6 Ladies teams are holding their own in their respective leagues, though if ALL players were available and FIT for ALL matches, we’d be a lot more successful.
The job of Ladies Captain doesn’t get any easier, not only in the amount of time it takes up, but also in the difficult decision making that goes with it. Trying to put out teams where everyone is playing in the team they want to be in and playing with the partner of their choice is almost impossible.
Unlike the men who have fixed squads, we have a ‘mobile’ selection system, whereby players move up and down the teams according to availability. This explains why one week someone might be playing in the 3rd team and the next in the 5ths! So please Ladies, don’t feel you’ve been dropped! It just means that more top players, such as Megan, Stephanie, Kellie, Oksana, Gina, Sue G, Gwen, Danielle, Sue T etc might have all been available that week!
I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to the ladies’ teams’ captains who have helped me to run the teams so far this winter. They are; Jenny Flood, Mary Coleman, Gill Snelgar, Lynne Chisholm and Rosie Clarke. I should also like to thank ALL the team players who turn out in the rain, wind, frost and snow to play for us. All 70 team players were invited to join us at the annual Ladies’ Teams Dinner at the Thai Orchid in November. In the event, we had a very big turnout of 50 ladies and we all enjoyed an excellent meal.
Here’s to a successful and enjoyable year of tennis in 2005!
